PROTOTYPES is an experimental fashion label founded in Paris in 2021 by Laura Prahl, who has a background in visual communication and art direction, and Ziga Dolenec, who comes from an architectural background. As the brand name suggests, PROTOTYPES places value on the prototyping stage and the thought process itself, rather than just the finished product. Its core approach is centered on upcycling-the reuse and reconstruction of existing garments and materials. Rather than treating clothing merely as a product, the brand views it as a medium for experimentation and expression of ideas, emphasizing and sharing the production process itself. Although primarily focused on menswear, many of its pieces are genderless. The designs often involve deconstructing traditional tailoring and existing garments, then reconstructing them using methods such as asymmetrical cutting and drawcord detailing, resulting in transformable silhouettes that change expression depending on how they are worn and moved. This aesthetic celebrates the beauty of unfinished forms. The color palette is typically monochromatic with added accent tones, and the materials range from functional to craft-like textures. Production is carried out in collaboration with European ateliers, and the brand frequently releases small-batch collections in a format it calls Series.
