Understanding the Origins of MASU Spiky
The Design Roots and MASU Philosophy
The Spiky—originally known as the Popcorn—first appeared in the 21FW collection. The name “Popcorn” comes from a popular 1990s fashion trend, primarily seen in women’s clothing featuring puckered, elastic textures.
The name “Popcorn” comes from a popular 1990s fashion trend, primarily seen in women’s clothing featuring puckered, elastic textures.
MASU reinterpreted this nostalgic element by creating a piece inspired by the A-2 flight jacket—a classic leather jacket adopted by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1931, characterized by a zip front and a single-piece leather back.
By combining the masculine silhouette of a military flight jacket with the feminine texture of gathered shirring, MASU embodied its philosophy of questioning conventional norms.
Through this design approach, the brand expressed its vision not through words, but through textile language.
Since its debut, the Spiky/Popcorn texture has evolved beyond jackets—appearing in tops, pants, and bags, ultimately becoming one of MASU defining signatures.
The Visual Impact of the Silhouette: The Aesthetics of Three-Dimensional Texture
The distinctive silhouette of MASU Spiky series is made possible through the use of polyester.
Depending on the item, different types of polyester fabrics—such as polyester dechine (lightweight with fluid drape) and polyester twill (durable with structure)—are strategically employed, but the key lies in the fiber’s thermoplasticity.
Thermoplasticity refers to the property that allows a material to soften when heated and harden again when cooled, enabling it to retain its shape permanently. MASU applies this characteristic through a reinterpretation of Japan’s traditional shibori dyeing technique.
Originally, shibori involved binding, stitching, or clamping fabric to resist dye penetration and create intricate patterns. However, MASU goal is not dyeing but rather to imprint a permanent three-dimensional texture into the fabric itself.
By fixing the material in its “bound” state and setting it under high heat, the brand achieves a spiky surface texture that does not revert even after washing.
This process causes the fabric to physically contract, resulting in exceptional elasticity without using polyurethane or other stretch fibers.
What truly defines the Spiky series, however, is its personalized fit.
Unlike typical stretch fabrics that “compress” the body, MASU spiky polyester texture gently adapts and conforms to the wearer’s shape, while the uneven surface traps layers of air, providing both comfort and insulation.
The result is a silhouette that hugs the body while the irregular texture acts as visual distortion, creating a fluid, ever-changing form that is unmistakably MASU.
Below, we will break down each Spiky jacket released to date, categorized by model number.
25AW “20XX”: Reinterpreting the Archive
M25F9BL010 - SPIKY PEGASUS BOMBER JACKET
This piece is an updated version of the jacket first introduced in the 2021FW collection, where the now-iconic Popcorn (currently Spiky) series made its debut.
Originally based on the A-2 flight jacket—a garment used by the U.S. Army Air Corps—this model transforms its military connotations through poetic reinterpretation.
On the left chest, graphics such as the “Love Bomb” and a “Pegasus detached from war” are printed, replacing symbols of combat with messages of peace and imagination.
Rather than a mere reissue, the design has been reimagined in MASU signature conceptual approach, blending nostalgia with modern craftsmanship.
The neckline features a subtle high-neck finish, allowing it to function as both an outer and an inner layer.
Due to the stretch and resilience of the spiky-textured polyester, the jacket forms a sculptural silhouette, with the front zipper standing out three-dimensionally when viewed from the side.
The cropped length, characteristic of MASU, emphasizes balance and proportion in styling.

A symbolic piece that encapsulates MASU 25SS seasonal theme, this shirt reinterprets the classic Ivy-style rugby shirt through the brand’s distinctive Spiky (Popcorn) processing.
The bold stripe pattern and contrasting collar preserve the garment’s preppy elegance, while the elastic, heat-set structure grants a soft, adaptive fit that releases the rigidity of traditional sportswear.
As the fabric stretches and contracts, the print shifts dynamically, expressing movement and individuality.

By transforming what was once an emblem of academic refinement into a tactile, expressive statement piece, MASU redefines tradition through its own lens.

For Long-Term Enjoyment: Care & Support by Material
Basic Care Instructions
Hand washing is recommended.
If using a washing machine, turn the garment inside out, place it in a laundry net, and wash it separately with a mild detergent.
Limit the spin cycle to 30–60 seconds, reshape the garment immediately, and dry it in the shade.
Because the material is heat-sensitive and may deform with high temperatures, avoid using a tumble dryer.
