These machines, primarily found in Wakayama Prefecture, are suspended from the ceiling in a cylindrical shape. Their design allows the fabric to be knitted slowly using only the weight of the fabric itself, without applying unnecessary tension to the yarn. The production speed is extremely slow, at approximately 1 meter per hour. This method maximizes the inherent softness and texture of the yarn, creating a unique, plump volume that feels as though air has been woven into the fabric. Woven using a principle similar to hand-knitting, the fabric is supple and highly elastic. Its key characteristics include excellent stretch and high durability. Because it is knitted in a relaxed state, the fabric is resistant to hardening or losing its shape even after repeated wear and washing, allowing its texture to last for a long time. Another characteristic is that it molds to the body the more it is worn, enhancing the fabric’s character. Due to low production efficiency and the dwindling number of skilled artisans, it is highly prized as a rare material, known for combining the warmth found in vintage clothing with timeless quality. The charcoal color is achieved through sumi dyeing.
